If you still have a traditional home phone, you might have heard that the UK’s landline system is being switched off. But what does that actually mean for your household?

Let’s break it down.

The UK is phasing out the copper landline network (known as PSTN) in favour of digital lines that use the internet to carry phone calls. The new system is known as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), or SIP in some cases.

What’s changing — and when?

  • BT and other providers plan to switch off the old system by 2027

  • Everyone will need to move to digital phone lines

  • You’ll make and receive calls using your internet connection

  • If you have an older handset or care alarm, it might need replacing or adapting

Will your phone stop working?

Not yet. But eventually, yes — unless you upgrade.

If you rely on a landline for emergency calls, careline systems, or just staying in touch with family, it’s important to plan ahead.

What do I need to do?

  • Check if your home broadband is up to scratch

  • Ask your phone provider if your current handset is compatible

  • Consider switching to a bundled digital phone and broadband plan
